The following are consolidated from multiple FM's and modified from U.S. Army Shotgun Qualification standards. These modifications are for clarity and are not intended to replace the originals.
Conditions: You are given a requirement to engage targets using a 12-gauge shotgun. You are given a shotgun, 10 rounds of #00 buckshot, Type E silhouette targets, a 25 meter range and a firing barricade.
Standards: Engaged targets with the 12-gauge shotgun, scoring a minimum of two pellets per round in the targets.
Performance Steps
1. Load four rounds of ammunition. (See Task 191-381-1253.)
2. Fire two rounds at the target from a standing position next to the barricade.
NOTE: Use the fundamentals of marksmanship when firing the shotgun.
a. Stand facing the target. Place your feet a comfortable distance apart, with your toes pointing at the target.
b. Place the butt of the stock into your firing shoulder, keeping the firing arm parallel to the ground. Lean forward into the shotgun from the waist, with your knees flexed.
e. Grip the fore-end assembly with the non-firing hand, keeping the elbow of the non-firing arm below the slide.
f. Fire two rounds of ammunition.
(1) Aim for the center mass of the target.
(2) Push the safety to "off" and pull the trigger to fire.
(3) Eject the spent round.
NOTE: When the round is fired, the slide is automatically released and moves slightly to the rear.
(a) Continue the movement by pulling the slide to the rear with a sharp precise movement.
( b) Push the slide forward with sharp movement until it locks with a snapping sound, chambering the next round, after the spent round is ejected.
(4) Engage the safety.
3. Fire two rounds at the target from a kneeling position next to the barricade.
a. Face the target. Place your non-firing foot forward, kneel on your firing knee, and rest your buttock on the heel of your firing foot.
b. Turn your non-firing shoulder slightly toward the target.
c. Place the butt of the stock into your firing shoulder keeping you firing arm parallel with the ground.
d. Lean slightly forward. Place the elbow of firing arm slightly beyond the knee of you non-firing leg.
e. Repeat step 2f.
4. Load four rounds of ammunition. (See Task 191-381-1253.)
5. Fire two rounds at the target from a crouched position next to the barricade.
a. Stand facing the target with feet spread a comfortable distance apart.
b. Step back with your firing foot, keeping your feet spread a comfortable distance apart and the toes of your firing foot pointing at a 45-degree angle.
c. Keep your non-firing foot in place and your toes pointing at the target.
d. Place the weapon stock under your armpit, and pull your firing elbow in close to your body to secure the stock in place.
Performance Steps
e. Place your non-firing hand on the fore-end assembly with your non-firing forearm parallel to the weapon.
f. Lean forward bending the non-firing leg while keeping the firing leg and back straight and the weapon barrel parallel to the ground at chest height.
g. Adjust the position of your feet for comfort and stability.
h. Repeat step 2f.
6. Fire two rounds at the target from a strong-side position around a barricade.
a. Stand behind the barricade and face the target. Spread your feet a comfortable distance apart.
b. Place your non-firing foot against the base of the barricade with your toes pointing toward the target.
NOTE: Using barricades for support places the firer at an increased risk of being hit by ricocheting rounds due to enemy fire.
c. Place your firing foot a comfortable distance to the rear and slightly to the left or right until your heel is in line with your non-firing foot.
NOTE: Your feet should form a 45-degree angle but may be adjusted for comfort and stability.
d. Place your non-firing hand on the fore-end assembly and place the butt of the stock against your firing shoulder.
e. Place your non-firing forearm against the barricade and your firing arm close to your body for concealment.
f. Lean forward and slightly bend your non-firing leg while keeping your firing leg and your back straight. Use the barricade for additional support, but do not allow the weapon to touch the barricade.
g. Repeat step 2f.
7. Load two rounds of ammunition. (See Task 191-381-1253.)
8. Fire two rounds over a barricade (window) at the target from a standing position.
a. Stand behind the barricade and place your non-firing foot behind and touching the barricade.
b. Place your firing foot a comfortable distance to the rear, parallel to the barricade.
c. Bend your non-firing leg to adjust to the height of the barricade, keeping your firing leg and your back straight.
d. Adjust your feet for height, stability, and comfort.
e. Place your non-firing hand on the fore-end assembly with the back of your non-firing hand resting on the barricade. Do not allow the weapon to make contact with the barricade.
f. Place the butt of the stock against your firing shoulder, ensuring that your firing elbow is no higher than the top of the barricade.
g. Repeat step 2f.
9. Clear the weapon. (See Task 191-381-1253.)
Evaluation Preparation: Setup: At the test site, provide a barricade that is approximately the same height as the target. The barricade should measure about 72 inches x 26 inches with an opening (window) cut 36 inches to 42 inches from the bottom of the barricade. The opening should be 18 inches wide and approximately 36 inches high. You must also provide a Type-E silhouette target at 25 meters and ten rounds of #00 buckshot for each person being evaluated. Brief soldier: Tell the soldier to fire the correct number of rounds from each firing position. Tell the soldier that he must correctly clear the weapon according to Task 191-381-1253.

Each soldier will conduct a blank-fire exercise under the same conditions as the actual qualification. Each soldier will have a coach to ensure that he is acquiring the target; that the weapon remains on safe until time to engage the target and is then placed back on safe; and that he maintains muzzle awareness throughout the exercise. If a soldier is having difficulty during the blank-fire exercise, he will not continue with the qualification and will be retrained. Soldiers should conduct SRM qualification semiannually, using the shotgun in the full stock configuration. In addition to qualification, commanders should conduct familiarization using the same qualification standards while altering the conditions. Firing the qualification tables with out stock, in protective masks and during periods of limited visibility with NVD’s should be included. Soldiers should train as they fight-that is with all MTOE equipment. The qualification is intended to be fired with open sights only. Iterations using laser aiming devices and close-combat optics (CCO) is currently not possible due to the configuration of the shotgun. Soldiers must complete a blank fire iteration of the qualification tables before conducting live-fire qualification.
.NOTE: | If the soldiers will be engaging targets with lasers, optics, or the protective mask, they should complete all steps using the same equipment. Do not have the soldier's familiarization with iron sights and then fire the live exercise while wearing the protective mask. |
Each soldier engages the target IAW the firing table (Table 7-5) and scores 16 hits day and night. The standard when wearing a protective mask is 14 day and 12 night. For scoring purposes, a hit is 2 or more pellets that impact within the "lethal zone." Scorers must also take into consideration the large hole which may be found on some targets a large hole may be found from the wad of the shotshell

The key to setting up a successful range for NL munitions is to ensure that they are in compliance with installation safety regulations. Kinetic energy is the force that pushes the projectiles down range. In most cases, kinetic energy will only carry these NL munitions projectiles 75 meters or less. This gives trainers flexibility as to the locations where a live-fire exercise can be conducted, especially in a field-expedient situation.
Mark off 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 75 meter distances from the targets with markers. Each of the NL munitions has minimum and maximum effective ranges within the distances of 5 to 50 meters and the Stingball Grenade is effective out to 75 Meters. Impact power and accuracy are greater at close distances and depleted at farther distances. The Stingball grenade delivers the same energy at all ranges. Targets can be anything from the standard E-type to more realistic three-dimensional manikins.
Note: This is a USMC only program. Stingball grenades should not be fired directly at individuals. The Army currently does not have Grenade Launching Cups, or the M-36 Sting Ball Grenade in inventory. The XM-104 Non-Lethal Bursting Hand Grenade SEP program should be expected to provide this capability to the Army.
